I started up Several Boinc Teams for Trek Fans United. Boinc is Distributed Computing (DC) software that uses your spare computer power for scientific projects. Your computer's unused processing power is set aside for the analysis of data, sent to you over the internet from a central source. Astrophysics, Biology, and Meteorology are a few of the scientific endeavors you can support through DC.

Boinc is new(er) software made by the same people who created Seti@home (University of California) However it allows you to work on several different @home projects and is a more efficient user of computer cycles.

You can download the Boinc program for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux, or Solaris. DOWNLOAD HERE.
The Different Projects:

Seti@home, or the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, is a scientific effort seeking to determine if there is intelligent life outside Earth.

ClimatePrediction@home is exploring how climate may change in the next century under a wide range of different scenarios.

Predictor@home is aimed at testing and evaluating new algorithms and methods of protein structure prediction in order to address critical biomedical questions of protein-related diseases.

Einstein@home, searchs for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors.

LHC@home, LHC stands for Large Hadron Collider, the project simulates how the particles travel trough the 27 km long tunnel. With the help of the calculated information, the magnets that control the beam can be calibrated with greater precision.

PrimeGrid@home, is trying to solve the RSA Factoring challange. It will test the difficulty level of breaking PGP-style encryption.

If you are already running Boinc you can join The TFU teams here.

Another choice for DC is Grid.org.

Grid.org is involved mostly in awesome medical research, however it is not compatible with Linux or Mac computer systems.

Boinc is new software made by the same people who created Seti@home (University of California)

However this software is more advanced, it allows for optimization of processing based on the type of CPU in your computer. It also has a nicer online interface and allows you to run multiple programs. For example I get data packets from ProteinPredictor@home, Seti@home, and ClimatePrediction@home.
35% of the time my computer works on Seti.
29.5% of the time my computer works on ProteinPredictor.
29.5% of the time my computer works on Einstein.
6% of the time my computer works on ClimatePrediction.

Its nice to have multiple packet sources in case one site has a server down or is out of unprocessed packets.

Seti@home searches for unusal radio signals in the air that could be produced by E.T.

ProteinPredictor tries to "predict protein structure from protein sequence" basically they are trying to figure out what the genome is doing, what sequences will create deseases, cancer, etc.

ClimatePrediction is trying to predict the climate conditions of the planet for the upcoming centuries. Establish from global warming or other changes in our world conditions what effects we can expect in our weather systems.

Einstein@home is a program that uses your computer's idle time to search for spinning neutron stars (also called pulsars) using data from the LIGO and GEO gravitational wave detectors.

SETI won't work on my screensaver cuz I use linux and SETI doesn't have a linux version of the program. Otherwise...I would, but all they seem to have is Micro$oft.

SETI definately has a linux client, most likely several. Poko posted a link and google returned a bunch of results including some HOWTO's if needed.

Its not a race (at least not in team). Everybody's computer helps. You could try running Climate Prediction or Protein as well, they all run slighly different on your computer.

I've got 5,600+ units on my own account - would that be added to the team total if I switch to BOINC and join?

I have 25 computers at work running the non-boinc Windows client, and I'm a bit reluctant to switch right now, but I'll do it if it helps.

Your credits do transfer, however the counting and ranking system is different. It focuses more on daily totals. I don't know if you will be entirely happy with a switch.

However Seti@home is starting to push users to switch, Boinc software is designed to work optimized with your computer hardware. (for example it uses the 64 bit architecture in my processor) so you actually are more efficent.

The machines at work are all older ones - they take about 16 hours or more to crunch a unit - in this case I might drag your daily totals down with them.

The machine at home averages a couple of hours to zip through a unit, but it is still a 32bit machine, since few programs actually ARE written to take advantage of 64bit architecture, I didn't see the need - do you know how the 64bit BOINC program runs on a 32bit machine?

Better yet - do I need to switch to BOINC to join? If not, then I'm IN!

Hey there,

I would join your team but that seems to mean I automatically quit the team I created:-/

Basically one cannot be in several teams at the same time, which is rather ennoying.

If you know a way round that, I am in.

well replying to my own post, it is part of the way seti@home teams work:

according to this page,
You may belong to only one team. You can join or quit a team at any time.{/QUOTE]

Ah well nevermind.
