At first I was happy to see this. Then I saw that the store was Amazon.com. I had heard the rumors, asked Amazon, and received written confirmation that yes, Amazon not only carries, but will continue to carry books & DVD's which promote and encourage dog fighting.

Amazon considers this a "free speech" issue :censored: , as if it wasn't all about the money.

I don't know if supporting a business which engages in promoting this type of animal torture and cruelty is in line with the spirit of any Star Trek. As I recall, the only members of the Federation which tortured animals were in the parallel dimensions. Do we want to align with that?

As a result, I no longer do business with Amazon. Sure, they are the cheapest for many things, but expediency should never be the reason you cast your morals and ethics aside. That wouldn't be very Gene Roddenberry, would it?

Personally, I don't see how accomodating a group of people, no matter how backwards they may be, constitutes 'promoting.' I may not agree with dog fighting (and believe me, I think it's heinous), but from a cursory search for "dog fight" on Amazon I only got a handful of items that could be considered pro-dog fighting, most of the rest were documentaries about, which likely cast them in a not-so-flattering light. There are much more pressing issues than whether Amazon carries a handful of books or DVDs about dog fighting, like whether those jeans you just bought from Wal-Mart or the shoes from Foot Locker were made by 12-year-olds in Vietnamese sweatshops.

Besides, I really doubt most people that engage in dog fighting are all that atune to things like Amazon, or the internet as a whole. ;)
