Paramount gets a lesson in viral marketing - from the fans
Written by Derek Kessler on Thursday, 27 March 2008
Star Trek (2009)It was just yesterday that AICN posted fresh pictures of a shuttlecraft and uniforms from the Star Trek (2009) shoot at the Pastoria Electric plant outside Lebec, California. The picutres showed both the inside and the outside of the shuttle as well as unknown cast in uniform and a closeup of Starfleet signage, what looks to be an away team jacket, and a view of the detail put onto the control panels of the shuttle. Paramount followed the posting with a request to take down the pictures, AICN says that they were called "incredibly fast." Since the take down was implemented, the pictures have spread across the internet in a manner that Paramount will not be able to control.

This, Paramount, is how viral marketing works. While the posting of the images was interesting enough, interest was only further intesified by the attention paid. We won't be posting the images here on TrekUnited News, because even though we don't always agree with everything Paramount does, they are giving us more Star Trek, so we love you guys and would like to stay on your good side. Really!

But this tells us two things. (1) Paramount is very intensely monitoring the internet for leaks about ST09, and (2) they cannot stop the internet. Once something is out there, it cannot be called back. While the pictures are no longer available on AICN, instead replaced with a notice about the Paramount take down request, they have popped up on numerous websites all around. Again, staying on Paramount's good side, I won't link you to them, but if you Google "Star Trek 2009 Shuttle," you might be able to find the pictures on some other site (along with a number of NASA articles posted here on TrekUnited [/shameless plug]).

Now, looking at these images, which you can't see here. Right?

First up is the red uniform, which is just like the one that we saw a few months ago on Chris Pine. Now the gray jacket thing: I like it. It has a very much space-age fabric look to it with a slight shimmer reminiscent of the old TOS uniforms. The badge is not a combadge, but it's also not sewn onto the uniform as a patch.

The shuttle externally has a lot in common with the chunky angular lines of the TOS shuttle, but it is more refined with small wings, metal paneling, and side-facing windows. It also has two large top-aft-mounted je turbine-like engines. Inside, it's not all shiny black and jelly bean buttons. There are still some switches and buttons, but they're much more conservative and functional than the non-descript buttons of the original Enterprise. Also present are at least two video screens complete with fancy graphics. The seating inside the shuttle is no longer rows of independent seats borrowed from the conference room set, they are now realistic seatbelt-equipped jump seats with shock frames that look like they could have been lifted straight out of a military helicopter.

The whole thing took place at the Pastoria Electric plant, which is filled with all kinds piping and tubes and whatnot that makes the perfect set dressing. This isn't the first time Star Trek has made a trip to an industrial plant, in the fouth season of Star Trek: Voyager, the "fortress/storage facility" seen in 'Concerning Flight' was really just a local power plant. In ST09, the Pastoria Electric plant will apparently be serving as a shipyard of some variety, with an operations sticker (complete with misspelling) for a fueling gantry slapped onto something that was photographed. There have been some set pieces added to the power plant which mostly seem to comprise of a part of a fueling station.
