New Voyage's "World Enough and Time" nominated for Hugo Award
Written by Derek Kessler on Saturday, 22 March 2008
Star Trek: New VoyagesFollowing up on successfully beating a bit to oust it from the running in the Nebula Awards, Star Trek: New Voyages' (now Phase II) latest episode, "World Enough and Time," is now up for the Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form award in the prestigious Hugo Awards. The episode, guest starring George Takei, was written by Marc Zicree and Michael Reeves. "World Enough and Time" is up against four other nominees.

The other nominees in the Short Form Dramatic Presentation category are:
Battlestar Galactica - "Razor" (Michael Taylor)
Doctor Who - "Blink" (Stephen Moffat)
Doctor Who - "Human Nature" / "Family of Blood" (Paul Cornell)
Torchwood - "Captain Jack Harkness" (Catherine Tregenna)

Unlike the Nebula Awards, the Hugo Awards delve deeper into the world of non-literature science fiction and fantasy. The awards have been voted on and presented annually since 1955 by the World Science Fiction Society, and were named for Amazing Stories founder Hugo Gernsback.

The 2005 Hugo AwardAlso unlike the Nebula Awards, Star Trek has had a strong showing in the nominations and wins. In 1968, Star Trek swept the enite Best Dramatic Presentation, netting all five nomination spots.
In the category of Best Dramatic Presentation (1958 - 2002) (bold denotes a win):
Star Trek: "The Corbomite Maneuver" (year nominated: 1967)
Star Trek: "The Menagerie" (1967)
Star Trek: "The Naked Time" (1967)
Star Trek: "Amok Time" (1968)
Star Trek: "Mirror, Mirror" (1968)
Star Trek: "The City on the Edge of Forever" (1968)
Star Trek: "The Doomsday Machine" (1968)
Star Trek: "The Trouble with Tribbles" (1968)
Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1980)
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1983)
Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1985)
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1987)
Star Trek: The Next Generation:
"Encounter at Farpoint" (1988)
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1992)
Star Trek: The Next Generation: "The Inner Light" (1993)
Star Trek: The Next Generation:
"All Good Things..." (1995)
Star Trek Generations
(1995)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine:
"The Visitor" (1996)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: "Trials and Tribble-ations" (1997)
Star Trek: First Contact (1997)
Star Trek: Insurrection (1999)

Starting in 2003, the Dramatic Presentation award was split into two categories, Long Form for works longer than 90 minutes, and Short Form for those under. Since then, Star Trek has only been nominated twice.
Star Trek: Enterprise: "A Night in Sickbay" (2003)
Star Trek: Enterprise: "Carbon Creek" (2003)

Other than the Long and Short Form Dramatic Presentation awards, the Hugo Awards give awards in a number of other categories, including Best Novel, Short Story, Semiprozine, Fanzine, and Best Fan Writer.

The nominees are chosen by the membership of the World Science Fiction Society. The top five submitted nominees are then put onto the final award ballot, which was released this week. Voters have until July 1, 2008, to submit their ballot. The winners will be announced at the World Science Fiction Convention in Denver, Colorado, on August 9, 2008.

Until then, you can check out "World Enough and Time" on the Star Trek: Phase II website.
