iPhone not the ST09 communicator
Written by Derek Kessler on Saturday, 22 March 2008
iPhone: Not a communicatorThe red rumor control phone is ringing. iPhone Savior is reporting that Star Trek (2009) is going to be using a modified flip-top version of the wildly popular Apple iPhone as the new personal communicator. That report is erroneous. According to TrekMovie.com, the new Starfleet communicators are from-scratch props and "look nothing like any commercially available product." Like much of the movie, the communicators will retain the same basic design as the originals, in this case having the flip-top lid that inspired modern day cellular phones.

Additionally, iPhone Savior claims their report to be coming from a source in Iceland, where some filming was rumored to be taking place. While location scouting was done in Iceland, it turns out that the production decided against doing any filming in the country and instead built the large set that we saw spied via helicopter a few weeks ago.

Additionally, Nokia may get involved with some promotions for ST09 (real communicator phone, anyone?), but there will be no product placement in the film. Being that it's set 250 odd years into the future, it wouldn't make much sense anyway.
