TOS-R Season 2 on track for DVD-only release
Written by Derek Kessler on Saturday, 22 March 2008
The Doomsday MachineStar Trek Remastered was dealt a blow when HD DVD collapsed in the face of overwhelming Blu-ray sales. The hybrid HD DVD/DVD Season 2 set was on track for release when Paramount cancelled all future HD DVD releases. With HD DVD out of the picture, we were left ot wonder when we would see a release of TOS-R S2, and if it would be in HD. Here's the answer: no HD, at least for now, and a date of August 5th.

Paramount has committed to BD releases, but does not yet have the capacity in place for such releases. In the meantime, they'll continue to new releases on DVD, and that includes TOS-R. Additionally, the discs in the TOS-R Season 1 box set were two-sided HD DVD combo DVD discs, a format that Blu-ray does not support due to structural differences in the way the discs are manufactured.

Season 2 of Star Trek Remastered contains 26 hour-long episodes, including the fan favorites 'Mirror, Mirror,' 'The Doomsday Machine,' 'Journey to Babel,' and 'The Trouble With Tribbles.' No word just yet on extras to be included in the DVD set, but it seems likely that it will contain a smiliar set to those on the Season 1 HD DVD release.

As soon as we hear when Star Trek Remastered and any other Trek releases are hitting Blu-ray, we'll let you know.
