Oh my, Mr. Sulu. John Cho has had plenty of roles in popular films, like American Pie and Harold and Kumar go to White Castle, but when he took on the role of Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek, it's the first time he's stepped into something bigger than he is. Cho didn't initially quite grasp the nature of Star Trek and the fandom's expectations, admitting, "So it is daunting, it's scary. Frankly, I'm not used to this kind of heat."
Soon after the news of his casting broke, Cho got an email from a friend that put everything into perspective. " 'Congratulations, I'm so happy for you, and also I just wanted to impart to you how great a responsibility this is,' and, like, just went on for a while about how important it was and how Star Trek changed his life and how it's responsible for everything good in his life."
Of course, Cho can't say much at all about Star Trek, given the secrecy that's surrounding the film. He did say, "It's been going great, what can I say except that it's really thrilling. There are a few dreams that you have when you're a little boy: It's cowboys and Indians, it's being on a spaceship. This is one of the great fantasies of my life."
In the meantime, you can catch John in a bit less serious of a film: Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, opening on April 25.
