The Original Series is now available for viewing on CBS.com. That about sums it up, really. CBS has fished out of the archives five classic TV shows, including Star Trek, and uploaded them all for free viewing onto its website. The other shows are Hawaii Five-0, MacGuyer, Melrose Place, and The Twilight Zone.
CBS is counting on the shows' presence on CBS.com raising their traffic, and thus ad revenue. The main ad revenue? Non-skippable commercials, but otherwise you get to watch for free, and the quality isn't half bad. It's not fantastic, but it's certainly not as bad as YouTube can get.
The entire original 79 episode run of Star Trek is posted in the "CBS Television Classics" library, though the other series may not be complete at this time.
Of interesting note, of the five shows, only two originally aired on CBS. MacGuyer was on ABC, Melrose Place on Fox, and of course, Star Trek was on and first cancelled by NBC.
CBS plans on adding more episodes and series to their online library in the future.
