Anton Yelchin keeps spilling the Trek beans [Potential Spoilers]
Written by Derek Kessler on Saturday, 23 February 2008
Anton YelchinStill out promoting Charlie Bartlett (the promotion seems to be working, as the film has finally caught the attention of major media outlets), Anton Yelchin is continuously being asked about Star Trek. Every single time. And with all these questions, he's bound to answer a few, right? Right. Among the beans spilled: Leonard Nimoy is the only TOS cast member in the film. More spoilerific beans after the break.

Of note, there will be more than one alien - Spock - on the Enterprise. Says Yelchin on the crew, "[There are] all sorts — it's a multi-ethnic film. There are lots of alien ethnicities." He said that the aliens are more than just green people with antennae and that we can expect more than just forehead prosthetics on our new Trek aliens, even those serving on the Enterprise.

Yelchin also finally met with Walter Koenig, on the set nonetheless. They discussed much about Chekov, even covering the oddball Russian accent the character uses. He said, "That's a trademark Chekov thing, the V's, so there's a lot of that in the film." ... "I did take the V/W thing, because I thought that was really [iconic]. We are doing our own thing, we aren't remaking the old show, but the whole goal is to do your own thing and be original, while being respectful."

"The first day I walked onto that bridge, I thought, ‘It’s the freakin’ Enterprise!’ It was really an epic feeling. I put on my Star Trek gear and thought, ‘Damn, it’s Star Trek!’"

Asked what his favorite scene was, Yelchin admitted that the last scene is it: "The end, when you see us all together. I can't explain how you get to see us all together, but it's pretty epic. ... You're on the Enterprise, and you just know it feels so epic. We shot the last scene in the film, and you see everyone in the gold, and the blue, and the red." There's that epic word again. Either a memo went out at Paramount about using that word, or it really is that mind-blowingly huge.

And on the plot, Yelchin somewhat clarified what we've known for a while, that this is an origin story of how everybody ended up on the Enterprise. "It’s about how it all comes together. It’s not just them arriving and saying, ‘Let’s just kick it on the Enterprise.' "

Anton does have some perspective on the Chekov character, noting, "It’s like all the other movies, Chekov is there on the ship and in a couple of important scenes, but it’s not like he’s Kirk or Spock."

And now there's this: "There’s only so many layers you can find to Pavel Chekov. But at the same time, it is fun to sit on the bridge of a spaceship screaming about Romulans." If you'll recall, it wasn't that long ago that Yelchin mentioned there being Klingons in ST09, so maybe we'll end up seeing both.

i leave you with this closing statement from Yelchin: "Two Spocks are better than one."
