New Voyages enters Phase II |

Following, at least to some degree, the path that Gene Roddenberry set out to do with Star Trek: Phase II, the crew at Star Tre: New Voyages has some changes in store. Notably, the name is changing to Phase II, along with the addition of new casts and changes working towards the Phase II/The Motion Picture versions of Star Trek.
Phase II was originally planned as a television follow-up series to the original Star Trek, but it eventually developed into The Motion Picture instead. This leaves several years between the end of TOS and TMP, which New Voyages is now attempting to bridge. Phase II got very far along in the planning process, with costumes, sets, scripts, and more all put together before the decision was made to switch to the film route instead.
James Cawley, producer and actor in New Voyages/Phase II, has been collecting a mass of information and materials on Phase II, all in preparation of slowly moving New Voyages towards the intended Phase II continuation (which was itself intended to portray a second five year mission under Kirk's command). The transition to Phase II is already underway with the filming of the next episode to be released: 'Blood and Fire.' Subtle changes, like Kirk wearing a Phase II style uniform shirt or Scotty in a Wrath of Khan radiation suit.
Also in the planning is a new engineering set based off the Paramount Phase II set and external changes to the Enterprise to bridge the gap between the TOS Enterprise and the TMP refit Enterprise. Filming for the episode after 'Blood and Fire,' 'Rest and Retaliation,' is expected to take place this June.
James Cawley has always prided himself as a purist, a point that he was sure to make when he came out in support of JJ Abrams' Star Trek reimagining. It is a risky move for New Voyages to enter this new phase - literally - for they have built a following with their faithful continuation of Star Trek.
The costuming and set changes aren't the only alterations in store. There are casting changes coming up for three characters. In 'Blood and Fire' we'll get our first glimpses of Ben Toplin taking the role of Spock, and in the following episode we'll see a new Chekov and Sulu, played by Jonathan Zungre and JT Tenapa, respectively. Tenapa is a veteran of fan films, having played the character Cory Aster for several years on Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, not to mention being an award-winning theatrical actor and producer. Also joining the cast is Patrick Bell as the Vulcan Xon, a character brought on for Paramount's Phase II in place of Leonard Nimoy, who had not planned to return. Unlike the original, however, Xon will be supplementing the crew and not replacing Spock.
The new Phase II website, startrekphase2.com, is now online as well. 'Blood and Fire' is expected to be released in April or May of this year.
