Originally slated for a March 25th debut, we've now learned that the second season of Star Trek Remastered has been delayed by CBS Paramount Television to some point later in the summer of 2008. The second season HD DVD/DVD combo set of TOS-R is expected to have the same fancy packaging and extensive high definition extras as the first set. No exact date has been given for the season two release, but as soon as we know we'll let you know.
No reason was given for the delay, though it would seem that Paramount may be reconsidering its commitment to HD DVD, given failing sales in the face of overwhelming support now on the Blu-ray camp. As we reported last month, Paramount is still officially supporting HD DVD, even though it still has an escape clause in its contract with the HD DVD Association. In recent days HD DVD has suffered numerous setback, including being dropped by the postal DVD rental company Netflix and Best Buy stores electing to promote Blu-ray over HD DVD.
Blu-ray disc sales accounted for 82% of the HD disc sales in the last week of January. In that same period, Blu-ray players held an conquering 93% of the high definition disc player market. This is inspite of the massive price discounts that HD DVD has desperately slapped onto its players and media, dropping new Toshiba players to a mere $130 retail.
It shouldn't be surprising if this summer we see seasons one and two of TOS-R out on Blu-ray. Then again, given the stubborness of Hollywood, it wouldn't be surprising to see season two come out on HD DVD regardless of the plummeting sales.
