Wrath of Khan in HD... if you have an Apple TV
Written by Derek Kessler on Tuesday, 12 February 2008
Star Trek in HDOwners of Apple, Inc's set-top Apple TV media box can now rent more than 100 HD movies, download them, and watch them on their HDTV. Included in the intial HD selection are a number of Paramount titles, including Charlotte's Web, The Italian Job (2003), A Mighty Heart, and Transformers. Oh, and this classic science fiction film from 1982 called Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.

The Apple TV update released today enables HD rentals from Apple's iTunes library. Right now there are just over 100 HD rentals available, with Apple promising many more to come. The rentals work in the same fashion as those announced last month for iTunes, $3.99 for new releases, $2.99 for library titles. The same six Star Trek movies are available through the Apple TV rentals, though only The Wrath of Khan is available in HD for $1 more, and only on the Apple TV.

The Apple TVThere are over 350 other titles from every major motion picture studio available through the Apple TV and iTunes. The current rental model allows you to download a movie, after which time you have 30 days to watch it. Once you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish it, during which time you can watch it as many times as you like. Movies rented via iTunes (unfortunately, not available in HD), can be transferred to Apple TVs and iPods for watching, even in the middle of a viewing.

Apple is banking that the update to the Apple TV to allow streaming of media straight to your HDTV will usher in the age of the connected living room. Like a dozen other companies, including powerhouses Microsoft, Sony, and the like, Apple has struggled to break into the living room space and sales of the first version of the Apple TV were lackluster at best (it didn't allow rentals and only synced with your computer). Apple's own studies showed that consumers were more interested in renting movies, since they would only watch them once, than they were in purchasing a movie, so after the dissapointing sales of films through iTunes, Apple followed the rest of the industry and brought rentals to their popular iTunes software. The Apple TV is available in two versions - 40 GB and 160 GB.

As of right now, TWoK is the only HD Star Trek movie available on the Apple TV, and is actually the only HD Trek movie anywhere. You can still catch Star Trek Remastered in HD in syndication on a handful of local broadcast television channels and you can grab Season 1 of TOS-R on HD DVD. Star Trek: Enterprise is currently airing in Hgh Definition on HDNet (available on both cable and satellite). Paramount and Apple will be adding more Star Trek HD titles to the Apple TV rental library in the future, though it is not yet known when, or if, the most recent four movies starring the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation will be available.
