Producer, director and writer Thomas Reynolds has been stunned by the response to his fan film project, Star Trek: The Expedition, based out of Las Vegas! Not only has he acquired the services of friends in the international Star Trek fan film community, from Hidden Frontier, Intrepid and Dark Armada, but he has also cast members of the local entertainment industry. In surprising news this weekend, Thomas announced that Randal Keith, best known his role as Jean Valjean in Les Misérables on Broadway and currently starring as King Arthur in Spamalot, has signed on to play one of the major roles.
Star Trek: The Expedition is well into pre-production and already has a cgi teaser, bloopers, and two short films online. Randal Keith, in his film acting debut, is to take over one of the previously cast roles, Commodore Mackenzie, that was screen tested in the first short film, 'The Choice.' Thomas has film in the can for the re-release of 'The Choice' - his 'director's cut' starring Keith - and is in the final stages of editing, so expect to see it within the next few days. The series revolves around Commodore Mackenzie's mission to stop a surge of refugees from swamping the Alpha quadrant. When contact is lost with them the U.S.S. Discovery is sent to investigate.
He will also be re-releasing a directors cut of his other short, 'Time Flies,' starring Nick Cook, listed as co-producer and one of the leading lights of Star Trek: Intrepid, and Tiffeney Wheeller as Executive Officer Zee Kendral. She plays a complex character who has a past with Mackenzie and is scarred by the experience of being a prisoner of war not once, but twice.
The Expedition has two other shorts in post production that should be out soon, the first with the debut of 'Rio Temple' and 'Elizabeth Rizzo' and the second starring Javier Alba and Tiffeny Wheeler. Elizabeth and Javier are experienced artists in their own right: Elizabeth with substantial TV and theatre credits and Javier as a former soap opera actor, a model and a gifted photographer.
Allen Merritt, another theatre professional, brings his extensive experience to the production as Adrian Jacobs, the Captain the Discovery. Andrew Foster, who plays his partner in a gay marriage, best known to Star trek fans as an alumni of Star Trek: Hidden Frontier, also brings a solid theatrical background to the film. Another fan actor is James T. Frost, whose character Jeremy Aster is based on the child who appeared on the TNG episode, 'The Bonding' and the crossovers continue with the appearance of Robin Hiert the writer and producer of the innovative European series, Star Trek: Dark Armada who will play Captain Jacob's nemesis. Look for Robin's short 'The Cure' sometime before March of 2008.
