The Doctor is going to Atlantis. Robert Picardo, who played The Doctor for seven years on Star Trek: Voyager, has secured himself a permanent spot on the cast of the fifth season of Stargate: Atlantis. Picardo's character, Richard Woolsey, will be taking command of the Atlantis Expedition following the departure of Samantha Carter (played by Amanda Tapping). Picardo has appeared on Atlantis five times in the previous four seasons.
Also of note, Paul McGillion will be a guest star for five episodes in the upcoming season (despite the death of his popular character Dr. Carson Beckett), along with appearances by Stargate: SG-1's Michael Shanks and the aforementioned Amanda Tapping. She is leaving Atlantis to star in Sanctuary, a sci-fi web series that was recently picked up for 13 episodes by Sci Fi Channel. Also joining the cast will be Firefly/Serenity actor Jewel Saite (playing Beckett's replacement, Dr. Jennifer Keller).
Picardo is far from the first Star Trek actor to have a part on either of the Stargates, though he is the first to secure a permanent spot on the cast. Previously we've seen... Rene Auberjonois (DS9: Odo, SG-1: Alar) Jolene Blalock (Enterprise: T'Pol, SG-1: Ishta) John Billingsley (Enterprise: Phlox, SG-1: Simon Coombs) John de Lancie (TNG: Q, SG-1: Frank Simmons) Colm Meaney (DS9: Miles O'Brien, Atlantis: Cowen) Dwight Schultz (TNG: Reginald Barclay, SG-1: The Keeper) Armin Shimerman (DS9: Quark, SG-1: Anteaus) Marina Sirtis (TNG: Deanna Troi, SG-1: Dr. Svetlana Markov) Connor Trinneer (Enterprise: Trip Tucker, Atlantis: Michael Kenmore)
This season will also bring Stargate: Atlantis to the magical 100 episodes mark.
