Continuing with some of the hundreds of questions posted by fans on TrekMovie.com, Star Trek writer Roberto Orci took the time to answer several more questions. Topics covered ranged from the title of the film to research resources, future Orci/Kurtzman films to which characters were the hardest to write. Click on through of a summary.
While Star Trek 'Zero' has been used as a way of describing how the film will be able to act as an introduction to Trek for non-fans, it is not a reboot. The title is simply Star Trek, 'no bloody numbers or colon.'
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have formed a production studio, KO (Kurtzman/Orci), and are working with Dreamworks on their first movie Eagle Eye. Shooting for the film started the same day as that for Star Trek, so Kurtzman is working primarily on Eagle Eye, while Orci stays on Trek (and consequently why we've seen so much of him and not so much of Kurtzman). Even though the studio is KO, the two switch places in the writing credits for every film.
The bridge set will be disassembled and stored for future use. With the actors already signed on for sequels, it stands to reason that in a few years they'll be pulling it out of the crates for another go.
Orci admits that he uses Memory Alpha often for researching the fine points of Star Trek canon, and has referred other members of the ST08 staff to the site to brush up on their Trek.
The script for Star Trek came out to 128 pages. The rule of thumb is that one page = one minute of screentime, which puts ST08 at approximately 2 hours long, though we won't know for sure until the final reel emerges from the cutting room.
For Orci and Kurtzman, the two hardest characters to writer were that of the villain (Nero) and James T. Kirk. He said that it was hard to avoid making Kirk a two-dimensional character, for we assume that we know how that character would react in a given situation. It's easy to get lazy when writing with known characters.
They drew on episodes like 'Balance of Terror' as well movies like ST II: The Wrath of Kahn, ST III: The Search for Spock, ST IV: The Voyage Home, ST VI: The Undiscovered Country and some of the novels written by Judith and Garfield Reeves-Stevens for inspiration, as well as the musical scores by James Horner (for ST II and ST III).
The Q&A session was closed with this message:
And as we close out the weekend, we are going to go radio silent for a bit. We don’t want to outstay our welcome and we need a bit of time to plan the rest of the year and we need to repay our friends at the studio for trusting us and giving us the freedom to communicate with you in such an open way. It’s their turn again.
We still read everything though, so don’t stop posting.
Talk soon.
