Yelchin: "Chekov is the weirdest guy," signed for three movies
Written by Derek Kessler on Tuesday, 29 January 2008
Anton YelchinOut promoting his independent dark comedy Charlie Bartlett with Robert Downey, Jr., the young actor was - as seems to be the case with all of the new Star Trek stars - bombarded with questions about the upcoming Trek film. In fact, Anton Yelchin is a little tired of all the questions about Star Trek, which - like all the other Trek stars - he is not allowed to talk about. That didn't stop the questions, so we were treated to Yelchin's thoughts on one Mr. Pavel Chekov.

Speaking with IGN, Yelchin was asked about the set for the new Enterprise, to which he answered, "Oh, it's pretty great. We were shooting a scene yesterday, and you really just realize how epic it is. That word is so overused, but it really is, kind of. It's pretty epic. You just sit there and you're like, "God damn, I'm on the Enterprise." Would I ever have thought that I'd be on the Enterprise? No. And it's pretty great. It's a pretty different experience, though. Very different."

Despite the fact that Yelchin was born in Leningrad, USSR (now Saint Petersburg, Russia), his work as Chekov is forcing him to adopt part of Walter Koenig's accent, which Yelchin described as 'interesting,' for it really isn't very Russian sounding. Yelchin has been watching the original Star Trek to get a feel for the character, and so that he can to some degree replicate Koenig's performance. And in watching Star Trek, he has come to the conclusion that Chekov is "...really is the weirdest, weirdest character."

At the same press event for Charlie Bartlett, CanMag took the time to ask Yelchin some more questions about ST08. And he revealed that he has signed for three Trek films, which seems to indicate that Paramount is very optomistic about the success of JJ Abrams' Star Trek. We'll find out in 330 days.
