The Russian space agency has revealed their plans to create an orbital platform for the launch of missions to the moon and Mars. The project, slated for completion by 2020, would serve as a launch platform for Russia's planned manned moon mission in 2025. Because of the enormous amount of equipment that would be required for a manned Mars mission (enough equipment and supplies to sustain a crew for a year), the rocket would have to be launched in segments and assembled in orbit. A platform like that proposed by Russia would allow for a more easily supervised construction process, as opposed to an automated assembly system. The International Space Station is projected for decommissioning by 2025.
