Here we are, with one year until the release of Star Trek. JJ Abrams and company are hard at work crafting the latest incarnation of our favorite franchise, and hopes are high that the movie will not disappoint and will serve to revitalize a classic that has faltered in recent years on both television and in theaters. So what can we expect in the next 366 days?
Spy Shots. After four separate sets of spy shots were published from the Star Trek set, including one of Chris Pine (James T. Kirk) in costume, Paramount has tightened the noose around the set to further restrict access, even from afar. They’ve gone so far to even cancel all smoking breaks, which is driving Winona Ryder (Amanda Grayson) crazy. While the paparazzi will undoubtedly still try to get the photos, I imagine that we will see them with much less frequency than we did earlier. Confidence: 75%
Teaser Trailer. Leading into the JJ Abrams-produced monster/horror film Cloverfield on January 18th you’ll be able to catch the teaser trailer for Star Trek. Don’t expect much, however, with filming underway for just under two months now (out of a five month schedule), there hasn’t been much of a chance to put together a teaser reel. I would count on seeing something reminiscent of the teaser trailer for the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, though the Star Trek teaser is rumored to include shots showing the construction of the Starship Enterprise. Confidence: 90%
The Enterprise. The original Star Trek had five main characters: Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, and the Enterprise. While we know who will be playing the first four, the final form of the new Starship Enterprise is still up in the air. Rumors have been swirling about the design, with the general consensus being that it will have two nacelles and a saucer, so thusly being recognizable as the Enterprise. From there, though, the agreement ends. Some rumors point to it being an unspecified radical revamping, while others say to only expect a few small details to be changed. If the Enterprise is not seen in the teaser trailer, press shots will come out at some point in the next few months. Confidence: 80%
Press Shots. From the spy shots we’ve already seen, we know there’s been some changes to things like Starfleet uniforms. Unless we can get somebody with a camera inside the set, the only way we’re going to see what the bridge of the new Enterprise looks like is for Paramount to release official press shots (or we can wait until December 25th). Confidence: 70%
Real Trailer. With the details of the plot so closely guarded – most actors had to be supervised while they read the script – when the real trailer with real footage from the film is released, it’ll be hard to know what to expect. Obviously there’s little doubt that we’ll see Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto, and maybe Chris Pine, Bruce Greenwood, Eric Bana, and the others, but what they’ll be doing is anybody’s guess. I predict that we’ll see a real trailer three months prior to release, and that it still will not reveal much about the plot. Confidence: 80%
The Plot. Short of somebody stealing the script or drugging JJ Abrams, the chances of us actually learning much more about the plot (Nero goes back in time to get rid of Kirk, old Spock tries to stop him) are pretty low. For a lot of people, myself included, Nemesis was ruined by the flood of details, including the entire script, that got posted to the internet months before the movie was released. Abrams has been so insistent upon tight security that actors have only been given a script for their parts, so only a few have an idea of what all is going on. Likewise, the graphics department has only received the information pertinent to their shots. Hollywood has locked down on secrecy this year, with little detail known about expected blockbuster films of 2008: Cloverfield (January 18), Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (May 22), The Dark Knight (July 18), James Bond 22 (November 7), and Star Trek (December 25). Of course, there are some other big films (The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (May 16), Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince (November 21), and Angels & Demons (December 19)) for which we already know the plot, being that they are based off of already published books. Confidence: 60%
William Shatner. Despite what Roberto Orci has said about them working to get Shatner in as old Kirk, it’s not going to happen. Old Kirk died in Generations, and the future part of Star Trek (2008) takes place after Nemesis. Small problem there, and creating a reason to bring back Kirk would be more work than its worth and create a part of the movie that only serves the purpose of bringing back Shatner. No shat. Confidence: 90%
The Premiere. Going out on a limb here, I’m going to predict that Star Trek (2008) will premiere on December 25, 2008 in theaters. Confidence: 100% (duh)
That wraps up my predictions for Star Trek (2008) in 2008. We’ll come back in a year to see just how different things turned out, in the meantime, you can read up on all of the Star Trek news to date in the December 2008 issue of Hailing Frequencies Open.
