Star Trek (2008) Rumor Round-Up: 12/16/07 - 12/22/07
Written by Derek Kessler on Sunday, 23 December 2007
Star Trek (2008)Greetings all and welcome back to the Star Trek rumor round-up! It seems as if JJ Abrams has not taken kindly to the paparazzi spy shots that have unveiled certain things about the production and has tightened the security belt (more on that inside). Unfortunately, that means we've now gone nearly two weeks now without a glimpse of what's going on on set! Anyway, we've got some news from the filming at Long Beach, Karl Urban's thoughts on McCoy, why they absolutely had to have Nimoy, and what they're doing about Shatner. Let's get on with the round-up!

Sci Fi Wire: ST08 dependent upon Nimoy
Turns out that even though the writers are having trouble figuring out a good way to write in William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy was in their scopes from the very beginning. While the script may have evolved over time and dropped one character in favor of another, Nimoy as old Spock was a constant force in the writing process.

Long Beach Press-Telegram: Star Trek done with City Hall
The filming at the Long Beach City Hall building wrapped up this week, and the security was tight. The actors were instructed to wrap themselves up in blankets whenever they went outside so that the paparazzi could not get a look at their costumes. Select city staff members, including Long Beach City Manager Pat West were afforded an experience that most Trekkies would kill for: they were permitted to sit in on the filming that took place inside the City Council Chamber. Of course, non-disclosure agreements were signed.

The Deadbolt: They are archetypes. You don't change those.
In an interview with Karl Urban about his starring role in the upcoming CBS mini-series Comanche Moon, Deadbolt took a moment to touch upon Star Trek. Ask how it would be different, Urban had this to say: "The film that we are making is very faithful in ways to the original series and the characters are the same archetypes which were established in the original series from the '60s" Also, JJ Abrams and company are apparently attracting a lot of attention in Hollywood (I know, no way!), enough so that Steven Spielberg dropped by the set to see how things were going.

Contact Music: Where there's smoke, there's cameras
As mentioned earlier, security around the Star Trek set has tightened considerably. To the point that smoke breaks have been banned to prevent paparazzi from getting shots of the actors in costume. This is driving Winona Ryder (Amanda Grayson) up a wall crazy, though she apparently understands the motivation behind the crack-down.

Hollywood.com: Lindelof: Still working on Shatner
"There are still ongoing talks. We're pretty much exactly where we were with Comic Con ... Look, the reality is Trek was up and running and in existence and iconic before we came so we've been basically invited to the party that these guys have been throwing for the last 40 years, so obviously it would be HUGE if Mr. Shatner wanted to be any part of the franchise. It's a challenge for us, though, because they killed Kirk off ... But hey, it's Trek, anything's possible, right?"
