The striking playwrights of the Writers Guild of America on Monday held a Star Trek-themed picket line at the home of Trek: Paramount Pictures. With filming continuing on JJ Abrams' Star Trek movie, the WGA decided to keep things fresh by adding a Trek-themed strike to their rotating list of sites. In addition to the writers, dozens of Star Trek celebrities showed up, including Armin Shimerman, Brent Spiner, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, and Harlan Ellison among the crowd of nearly 400.
The Star Trek themed strike was the latest in a series of themes, including Battlestar Galactica and Firefly strikes. Aided by internet networking and the support of fans, each strike has netted dozens, and in this case - hundreds - of protesters. Writers, actors, and fans all turned out for the Star Trek strike, with people involved from across the franchise's 40 year history.
Trek celebrities like Scott Bakula and George Takei made their presense known as the crowd continued to grow and even the writers of the new Star Trek, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, spent some time with the crowd, giving multiple interviews with the media gaggle that covered the event.
Vaughn Armstrong's Enterprise Blues Band entertained the crowd for over hour at the main gate - the famous Paramount arch, then moved on to support picketers at the other entrances to the Paramount lot. Located at 5555 Melrose Place in Hollywood, the Paramount gate sees a lot of passing traffic, many of which showed signs of support for the strikers, even flashing the Vulcan salute to the crowd. As with any strike, there were also the naysayers that shouted obscenities and the like at the pickets, but with the large crowd present it made little difference.
The following Star Trek notables made appearances of support at the strike: Writers:
Ira Steven Behr Hans Beimler Chris Black Andre Bormanis Fred Dekker Rob Dougherty Harlan Ellison Jane Espenson David Gerrold Andre Jacquemetton Maria Jacquemetton Alex Kurtzman
| | Nicholas Meyer Ron D. Moore Roberto Orci Garfield & Judith Reeves-Stevens Naren Shankar Phyllis Strong Mike Sussman Michael Taylor Bradley Thompson David Weddle Ron Wilkerson Robert Hewitt Wolfe
|
Actors
Vaughn Armstrong Scott Bakula J. Paul Boehmer Victor Brandt Chris Doohan Menina Fortunato Jennifer Hetrick Walter Koenig Chase Masterson Scott McDonald
| | Anthony Montgomery Nichelle Nichols Robert O'Reilly Steve Rankin Tim Russ William Schallert Armin Shimerman Brent Spiner George Takei Wil Wheaton
|
Production Crew
Juan Fernandez Alan Kobayashi Dennis Madalone Ronald B. Moore
| | Tom Morga Michael Okuda Denise Okuda Jim Van Over
|
In addition, Rene Auberjonois, Jeffrey Combs, Bryan Fuller, Ethan Phillips, Bob Picardo, Andrew Robinson, and Garrett Wang all sent messages of support, but were unable to attend due to other commitments.
To quote the WGA Trek strike shirt worn by many in attendance, "Logic clearly dictates that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. (Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan)"
