Another week, another round up. This time around, there's not a lot of rumoring. It seems that with production officially under way the crew has plugged most of the leaks and Star Trek is running in full radio silence. This week we've got a talk with George Takei (oh my), rumor of what the Enterprise will look like, what happened down at the Vasquez Rocks, and with the ongoing strike, how Zachary Quinto feels.
IESB.net: Enterprise not that different Another vague and conflicting rumor this time. According to IESB.net, an image of the new Starship Enterprise went out with a kit for licensors who make Trek merchandise. Apparently, the shape of the Enterprise is the one that we're all already used to, the main change is a new 'grittier metal texture' that sounds rather reminiscent of the Enterprise NX-01. Of course, with so many conflicting rumors about what to expect, I wouldn't be surprised if this turns out to be false. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be true. As with many things with Star Trek (2008), the waiting game begins. Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
IESB.net: Vasquez to serve as Vulcan birthing place? According to an informant that accompanied WGA strikers to the on location set of Star Trek out at California's Vasquez Rocks, the location made famous in Star Trek for the Kirk vs. Gorn fight, iit is instead serving as the backdrop for a birth, with lots of Vulcans around. Assuming that this is the birth of Spock, a problem arises, as we already saw his birth in Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
Starburst: George Takei to be in Star Trek (2008)? According to the latest issue of Starbust Magazine, George Takei will be appearing in the new Star Trek movie (due in theaters on December 25, 2008). In an interview with Takei about his work on Heroes and Star Trek (mostly discussing/promoting the Star Trek Remastered HD DVD set), Starburst let drop the news that he will be appearing in JJ Abrams' Star Trek. We can assume that he would be playing his iconic character Hikaru Sulu, albeit aged a bit since we last saw him in the Star Trek: Voyager episode 'Flashback' in 1996. Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
Trek Movie Report: Is not! In response to Starburst's article which mentioned Takei as being part of ST(08), TMR started dialing in its sources, and they've proclaimed that George Takei is in fact not in the movie, and that there is not a part for him in the script (which with the WGA strike on poses a problem to adding new characters). Also, they spoke with Takei's business manager, who said "The Starburst Magazine article is erroneous, we will be as surprised as the fans if George is in Star Trek XI." Hmmm. Los Angeles Times: Quinto feels guilty about filming during strike Even though he's not a Writers Guild of America member, young Spock Zachary Quinto still feels a measure of guilt over his filming during the strike. Of course, he is contractually obligated to do the filming, just as WGA member JJ Abarms is to direct and produce Star Trek (in addition to hitting the picket lines). "To be working through this and to be required to work is also really strange. It’s a combination of feeling really fortunate and oddly awkward and guilty and weird." Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
TrekUnited: Star Trek trailer to be attached to Abrams' 'Cloverfield' The teaser trailer for Star Trek (2008) will be shown before another JJ Abram's movie, the New York City monster mystery horror show 'Cloverfield,' which is also known by the date on which it will premiere, 1-18-08. While not much is known about the shaky action camera style movie, we have learned that the trailer for Star Trek will show the construction of the Starship Enterprise, and that work on the trailer began before production of the movie itself.
