According to the latest issue of Starbust Magazine, George Takei will be appearing in the new Star Trek movie (due in theaters on December 25, 2008). In an interview with Takei about his work on Heroes and Star Trek (mostly discussing/promoting the Star Trek Remastered HD DVD set), Starburst let drop the news that he will be appearing in JJ Abrams' Star Trek. We can assume that he would be playing his iconic character Hikaru Sulu, albeit aged a bit since we last saw him in the Star Trek: Voyager episode 'Flashback' in 1996.
The role of young Sulu was already cast to comedy actor John Cho. According to the interview, Takei will be featured in a 'flash forward' scene (as opposed to a flashback) with Leonard Nimoy as old Spock. While we don't know just how much screentime Takei will get, at this time it appears that his role be one as a cameo.
UPDATE: Trek Movie Report: Is not! In response to Starburst's article which mentioned Takei as being part of ST(08), TMR started dialing in its sources, and they've proclaimed that George Takei is in fact not in the movie, and that there is not a part for him in the script (which with the WGA strike on poses a problem to adding new characters). Also, they spoke with Takei's business manager, who said "The Starburst Magazine article is erroneous, we will be as surprised as the fans if George is in Star Trek XI." Hmmm.
