Chalk this one up under weird news: Brian May, the former guitarist from Queen, has been appointed as the new chancellor for Liverpool John Moores University. The 60 year old rock star completed his doctorate in astrophysics a year ago and said of the appointment: "It's a great honor and a great new challenge."
Already a fellow at Liverpool John Moores, May will take the leadership of the university early next year. The school's vice chancellor, said of May, "In this age of celebrity culture, it is rare to find someone who has fame, fortune and universal acclaim and yet who remains true to his core values of learning and enlightenment."
In 1970, May was pursuing a PhD in Astrophysics when his band Queen burst into popularity. He abandoned his studies for nearly 40 years before being awarded his qualification by the Imperial College London in 2006.
Liverpool John Moores University was founded in 1992 from the former Liverpool Polytechnic. Brian May wil be following Cherie Booth - the wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair - as chancellor.
