Star Trek Remastered S1 HD DVD set on sale TODAY
Written by Derek Kessler on Tuesday, 20 November 2007
Star Trek RemasteredThe day is upon us: the Star Trek Remastered season one HD DVD/DVD set has been released upon the world. Using cutting edge scanning techniques and updated computer graphics, the original Star Trek (1966-1969) has been remastered in high definition and recieved a much needed modern facelift. And now, after airing in syndication nationwide, the first season of Star Trek Remastered is available for purchase in an unprecedented DVD / HD DVD combination set.

Most every station syndicating Star Trek Remastered broadcast in in standard definition, as the technology needed to recieve, store, and broadcast HD shows is still out of the fiscal reach of most stations (passing through a national HD feed and broadcasting live HD are significantly more achievable). This HD DVD set marks the first chance for most viewers to watch Star Trek in high definition, and at your own pace. The set also includes standard DVDs for viewing in regular players and televisions.

Also included are 80 minutes of additional special features that chronicle the creation of Star Trek, behind the scenes home movies, interviews with the cast, and interactive trivia features integrated with the episodes themselves (courtesy of the imcomprable Mike and Denise Okuda).

Star Trek Remastered Season One HD DVD SetThe first season of Star Trek includes many of the highly acclaimed episodes that made Star Trek a cultural phenomenon. Among them are 'Where No Man Has Gone Before,' 'Balance of Terror' (which introduced the Romulans), 'The Menagerie' (which reused film from the original pilot 'The Cage'), 'Space Seed' (which introduced super villain Khan), and arguably one of the best science fiction stories of all time: 'City on the Edge of Forever.'

The remastered Star Trek is digitally remastered in high definition, providing more than 600% the resolution of standard definition and 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound.

So, you're ready to buy the Star Trek Remastered HD DVD set, but you don't own an HD DVD player. Which player should you get? That all depends on what you have in the way of an HDTV, and how you're feeling about the ongoing format war between HD DVD and Blu-Ray. Time to run down the list, from bottom to top:

Toshiba HD-A2: This is last year's baseline HD DVD player, it puts out an image at 720p (720 progressive lines) or 1080i (1080 interlaced lines). It plays HD DVD, upconverts standard DVDs to HD, and CDs.
Outputs: Composite Video, S-Video, Component Video, and HDMI (an all in one HG video/audio cable).
List price: $299.99
Amazon sale price: $224.95 (save 25%)

Toshiba HD-A3: Here we have the updated to the HD-A2. Like the HD-A2, the A3 sports 720p/1080i output , plays HD DVD, upconverts standard DVDS, and regular audio CDs. The difference? The A3 supports several new features introduced to HD DVDs after the release of the A2. While the A2 will still play the movies, it lacks the interactive features of the A3. The Toshiba HD-A3 also comes packaged with the HD DVDs of The Bourne Identity and 300.
Outputs: Composite Video, S-Video, Component Video, and HDMI
List price: $299.99
Amazon sale price: $199.00 (save 33%)

Toshiba HD-A30 HD DVD Player
Toshiba HD-A30:
And now we get to full HD 1080p so that you can take the best advantage of that shiny new HDTV you just bought. The A30 also supports 1080p/24 (24 frames per second), to provide a smoother viewing experience than the typical 16 frames/second of standard television, and features better upconversion of regular DVDS. The Toshiba HD-A3 also comes packaged with the HD DVDs of The Bourne Identity and 300.
Outputs: Composite Video, Component Video, and HDMI
List price: $399.99
Amazon sale price: $298.00 (save 25%)

Toshiba HD-A35: So what makes the A35 different than the rather similar A30? For one, it has analog outputs for both HD video and 7.1 surround sound. It also has a slim case (about half the thickness of earlier generation players). That's about it.
Outputs: Composite Video, Component Video, HDMI
List price: $499.99
Amazon sale price: $405.16 (save 19%)

Toshiba is currently running a promotion on HD DVD players that gives you 5 free HD DVDs (details), and those who purchase the Star Trek Remastered HD DVD set and a Toshiba HD DVD player will recieve a free classic phaser pistol remote.

That covers the stand alone players that support HD DVD. There's also the xBox 360 HD DVD attachment, and the LG BH100 Blu-Ray/HD DVD player (List: $999.99, Amazon: $747.97 save 25%) for those of you that don't mind sacrificing HD DVD's interactive features in return for being able to ride out the format war without taking sides.

Buy: Star Trek Remastered Season One HD DVD (List: $194.99, Amazon: $135.95 save 30%)
