That's right, the original Star Trek is being digitally remastered by CBS Paramount Domestic Television. Not only are they cracking open the film vault and rescanning everything in HD quality, they're also redoing many of the visual effects with CGI!
Doubtless, some purist fans won't take this news nicely, but according to an article posted on StarTrek.com, the newly remastered and edited series will be sold into syndication on more than 200 channels across the United States, starting on September 16, 2006. It is not likely that the episode will be aired in either first-aired or production order, as the first batch will be selected from the fan favorites. Updates will include:
- Starship exteriors of both the Enterprise and other vessels. The original Enterprise model in the Smithsonian Institute was remeasured to ensure accuracy of the new CGI model.
- Space shots will be redone with CGI.
- Many of the matte painting backgrounds will be replace with new CGI versions with better depth and atmosphere.
- The opening sequence will be revamped entirely, with a re-recorded themesong and new CGI shots of the Enterprise, Shatner's "Space, the final frontier..." monologue has also been remastered.
Broadcast order, stations, international availablity, and DVD, HD DVD, and Blu-Ray information were not available at press time.
