Nobody saw that one coming. The Australian actor best known for his role as Bruce Banner from the 2003 film Hulk has been cast as the primary villain in Star Trek (2008). Reports from Star Trek.com and Variety say that the actor has been signed, he will be joining Anton Yelchin (Chekov), Zoe Saldana (Uhura), and Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy (Spock and Spock). Star Trek is currently set for a Christmas 2008 release and is scheduled to begin filming next month.
Details about Bana's role are slim, all we know is that he is playing a villain named Nero. Who Nero is or what he is doing is currently unknown. This also appears to override previous reports that Russell Crowe would be playing the villain.
It is not currently know who will play James T. Kirk or Scotty in the movie, but with filming just around the corner it stands to reason that contracts already have been or will be soon signed. Unlike previous Star Trek movies, producer and director JJ Abrams has gone to great lengths to ensure secrecy about the new film. The when, where, who, how, and why of characters, plots, locations, and pretty much everything else is still up in the air.
Eric Bana was born in Melbourne, Australia in 1968. He began his acting career in the series Full Frontal and gained recognition with his role in Chopper (2000). Bana joined Hollywood in 2001, playing Delta Force Sergeant Norm 'Hoot' Gibson in Black Hawk Down. He has since appeared in Hulk (2003), Troy (2004), and Munich (2005).
