Entitled "Just Passing Through," the brief film tells the story of how First Officer Robert Tacket and Chief Engineer Michelle Smithfield met several years before the setting of the full-length Farrafut features such as "The Captaincy." The script was written by Holly Bendar (who plays Smithfield), and Dennis Russell Baily, a man best known for his script work on Star Trek: The Next Generation and Starship Exeter's "The Tressaurian Intersection."
Once a number of props, set pieces, and constumes were carried inside the building, work began on transmorming the small auritorium in the present to the Starfleet officers' club of the future, complete with a space-age bar, the obligatory 3D chess set, and drinking fluids in a variety of colors. Before long, most of the men and women disappeared into their respective dressing rooms to put on the uniforms and have makeup applied before shooting began.
While most of the Farragut's adventures have focused on the officers of just one starship, "Just Passing Through" features crew members from a number of Starfleet vessels. Since this story takes place years in the past, even those with familiar faces are wearing unfamiliar rank strips or less facial hair than we're used to.
On familiar face missing from the vignette was Paul Sieber (who plays Security Chief Henry Prescott). Just as he did for "The Captaincy," Sieber moved behind the camera to serve as director. Filming began at 9 AM on August 25th, and by 4 PM that same day, filming of the 14-page script had been completed, including an action scene that used most of the 20 actors invovled in the production.
"Saturday's shoot went extremely well," said Executive Producer John Broughton afterwards. "Thanks to everyone for their hard work on making the day so successful." He added that the vignette is "purely classic Trek. Starship Farragut has unlimited potential, which we've proved time and time again. We continue to make a quality produc, incredible and entertaining tales of likeable characters, and new Star Trek."
He conluded, "Damn the torpedoes, warp speed ahead!"
Also, the second trailer for "For Want of a Nail" is now online for your viewing pleasure. The final product is scheduled for release on October 10.
