Zoe Saldana confirmed as the new Uhura
Written by Derek Kessler on Monday, 17 September 2007
Zoe SaldanaAs was first reported last month, actress Zoe Saldana has been signed to play the iconic Uhura in Star Trek (2008), according to reports from both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. Her previous work includes Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, Pirates of the Caribbean, Drumline, and The Terminal. Already signed on for Star Trek are Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy as Spock and the Russian-born Anton Yelchin as Pavel Chekov. The role of Uhura was played by Nichelle Nichols in the original Star Trek series and motion pictures. Potential spoilers follow.

Star Trek has been describeby director and producer JJ Abrams as a "reimagining," and not a reboot. It is rumored to be going back to the time before the original Star Trek series, often as a Starfleet Academy story, but if the ages of the characters and the pledge by writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are anything to go off of, it will be set at some point later than that.

Characters yet to be cast include Hikaru Sulu, Montgomery Scott, and Captain James T. Kirk. Russell Crowe is rumored to be pursued by the producers to play the film's villain, which has been rumored to be Romulan. As any good Trekkie knows, Kirk and company didn't get to see any Romulans face-to-face until the middle of the first season, so there won't be any epic shirt-ripping hand-to-hand battle between whomever plays Kirk and the former Gladiator star, nor will Kirk be dueling and Romulans with his fists.
