Well, I've got a whole slew of Star Trek (2008) news for you this week. You'd think I was making some of this up, but you just can't make up some of the stuff that's floating out there! We've got possible casting news, big stars, crazy stars, more "I wanna be in," and JJ Abrams is heading abroad in his quest for the perfect location. That's right, ladies, gentlemen, and others, it is time for the round-up!
IGN: Tom Cruise and the rumor that just won't die I thought we had crushed the rumors of Tom Cruise being in ST(2008), but it appears that the media still can't get enough of him. This time he's not going to be playing James T. Kirk, though. They want to put him in as the new Captain Christopher Pike. I wouldn't put much stock in this rumor. Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
The Hollywood Reporter: Anton Yelchin in negotiations to play Chekov The Russian-born actor Anton Yelchin is reportedly in negotiations to play the young (if the rumors are true, very young) Pavel Chekov in ST(2008). He'll be replacing/complimenting Walter Koenig's role as Chekov in the original Star Trek and the first seven Star Trek movies (not to mention in the fan production New Voyages). Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
Rotten Tomatoes: Sydney Tamiia Poitier auditioned for a role We don't know what the role is or if she's gotten it, but she's apparently out of the loop too. "I auditioned for it and I'm curious who got what roles in there." If she recieves a role, it seems likely that it will be as Uhura, but what do I know? Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
IGN: JJ Abrams wants Russell Crowe Seriously. They'd said earlier in the week that they knew Abrams was going after some star power, now they've revealed that he wants none other than the star of "Gladiatior" and "A Beautiful Mind" to play the villan in Star Trek (2008). Personally, I love Crowe's work and think that his addition would do nothing but promote Star Trek to a higher level of awareness (and hopefully social acceptance, but that might be asking a bit much). That said, Russell Crowe is a busy man and may simply not be able to make the filming possible. Cross your fingers, mine sure are! Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
Frettabladid: Leikstjóri Star Trek til Íslands Oh, to be able to read, uh, Icelandic. Thankfully, the folks over at Trek Movie can, or they've got an online translator they're not telling me about. Anyway, JJ Abrams himself is headed to Iceland to check things out. The report also states that they will be arriving in the Spring to do the filming, which is a little late considering that filming in on the Paramount lot starts in November. Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
IESB: James Kyson Lee wants to be Sulu Lots of casting stuff this week! Another Heroes actor has said that he wants to be in ST(2008), this time it is James Kyson Lee (Ando on Heroes), which would put him in contention with Masi Oka, though the latter didn't seem to interested in the role, which of course is Hikaru Sulu. And let us not forget that his nemesis on Heroes, Zachary Quinto, has already been cast as Spock. Discuss: TrekUnited Forum
