Well, after last week's big news swirling around Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy in their rolls as Spock, things have quieted down quite a bit. This week I've got for you a lengthy interview with Leonard Nimoy after the Comic Con announcement, and a casting sheet (unfortunately without a wishlist of actors for the role). Yeah, it's a bit of a let-down after last week, but what are you going to do about it? Enough lollygagging around, it's time for the round-up!
TrekMovie: Interview with Leonard Nimoy: Part 1 || Part 2 So, what does the original Spock have to say about Star Trek (2008). A lot, it turns out, and in some cases not much at all. To break it down, Nimoy is coming out of retirement because (1) JJ Abrams is great, (2) Zachary Quinto is great, and (3) his part is essential to the film and not just a cameo for the sake of a cameo. If it were just a part to satisfy fans (like the part he turned down in Star Trek Generations), then he said that he would not have accepted the invitation. They are honoring the canon, he has multiple scenes, but he is of course not spilling any beans at this point. Oh, and apparently William Shatner isn't as furious as the tabliods portrayed him; dissapointed, but not furious.
AICN: It's a casting sheet! And there's not much more to be said about it.
STAR TREK Feature Film SAG PARAMOUNT PICTURES/BAD ROBOT
[JAMES KIRK] 23-29 Handsome, cocky self assured and earnest. Great physical condition. 6 ft or less
[LEONARD (BONES) MCOY] 28-32 Medic on the Enterprise. Smart, clever and a bit danger-loving. Dark hair, blue eyes.
[UHURA] 25ish African American. Brilliant, beautiful, heroic and FUN!, Uhura is almost tom-boyish - as if she grew up in a houseful of brothers.
[SULU] 25-32 Asian American male (preferably Japanese). Helmsman on the Enterprise. Extremely fit, capable and dedicated. A bit of a wildcat
[MONTGOMERY (SCOTTY) SCOTT] 28-32 a brilliant ship's engineer. Must be able to do a flawless Scottish accent!
| Of note, there is no Chekov. With all of these characters supposedly in the movie, and the fiven ages of Kirk and McCoy, it stands to reason that the rumors of this being about Kirk and Spock's first meeting seem to be on the path to wrong. With no Chekov, it would seem that Star Trek (2008) will be set around the time of the beginning of James T. Kirk and the U.S.S. Enterprise's legendary five year mission. And with the report of lots and massive planetary sets being planned, this little quote just seemed too appropriate:
"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the Starship Enterprise. Her five year mission: to explore strange new worlds. To seek out new life and new civilizations. To boldly go where no man has gone before."
