The theme for the next fan film chat on Saturday, June 2 is changes - “Ch-Ch-Changes!” Bowie said it best! This week has been a milestone for two of the major fan film groups and we are going to help them celebrate their changes. With the release of the last episode of “Star Trek: Hidden Frontier”, we are looking at the end of an era and a re-birth as a new series, "Star Trek: Odyssey". "Star Trek: Intrepid” on the other hand are experiencing a coming of age, after four years hard work, with the release last week of their first episode!
“Star Trek: Hidden Frontier” (HF) should need no introduction to Star Trek fans. They have not only maintained a cracking adventure over seven seasons with engaging characters involved in events of dramatic importance, they have taken the Star Trek adventure in a direction that it would almost certainly never have gone in a professional production. Star Trek: Hidden Frontier which finished its final season with the release on May 19 of "Its Hour Come Round At Last", was started by Rob Caves and friends in 2000, and in the intervening seven years has confronted issues that Paramount has skirted for forty years, most noticeably the inclusion of regular gay characters. We could be forgiven for seeing this last episode as simply the end of an era, a sad time of reflection on the “Glory Days”, however the creators of Hidden Frontier have chosen to make this into a new beginning, a whole different direction for their fan film production group, Areakt Productions, with the start of pre-production for their new series, “Star Trek: Odyssey”.
“Star Trek: Intrepid” have come a long, hard road as well, starting from scratch with no training or experience and little equipment, just an idea and a determination to see it become reality. Over the course of four years they have “paid their dues” – they have taught themselves the skills, acquired the equipment and technology needed to get the job done, and done well, with solid production values – beautiful CGI & crisp, green-screened backgrounds – a character driven script and strong performances. Last weekend, May 26, marked the release of their long-awaited premiere, a full length episode, “Heavy Lies the Crown”.
I cannot help but see this as a “coming of age”. In traditional societies and olden times, boys would go through a rite of passage to become men, which in these less sexist times, we can equate with the transition from innocence to maturity and becoming an equal member of society. Star Trek: Intrepid started off as a group of fans who were inspired by the pioneers of Star Trek fan films, Starship Exeter, Star Trek: New Voyages and, yes, Hidden Frontier as well. They went through the stages of apprenticeship and journeymen until now they are ready to take their place amongst the groups that brought them into the field as peers, equals. Just as they benefited from the help and support of others, they are now passing on their experience and are the inspiration for a new generation of fan film makers, most noticeably, “Star Trek: Dark Armada”.
These are just two of the changes taking place in the fan film community right now and harbingers of more changes expected in the foreseeable future. Join our guests and find out the direction of Star Trek fan films.
