Roddenberry to be inducted into Science Fiction Hall of Fame
Written by Derek Kessler on Saturday, 21 April 2007

Star Trek.com: The late Gene Roddenberry has been named as an inductee into the Hall of Fame at the Science Fiction Museum in Seattle. The Science Fiction Hall of Fame "honors the lives, work and ongoing legacies of science fiction's greatest creators," according to a press release.

The induction ceremony will be held Saturday, June 16, at 8 p.m. at the Experience Music Project/Science Fiction Museum (EMP/SFM) at the base of the Space Needle. As part of the induction, a display featuring personal artifacts and video footage from Roddenberry will be added to the existing Hall of Fame exhibit. Plus, he will be featured in a laser-etched image on the translucent, glowing Hall of Fame display.

"Roddenberry's vision is much more than a galaxy filled with danger and adventure," the press release further states. "He used science fiction to present a future in which humanity has finally set aside personal differences to create a society based on equality and fairness. The stories in Star Trek entertain, but also act as a reflection of our own world and challenge us to reconsider our prejudices and assumptions. Star Trek is not only one of the most popular science fiction franchises, at its best it's science fiction with depth and emotion."

Roddenberry is one of four inductees chosen this year. The others are film director Ridley Scott ("Alien," "Blade Runner," etc.), author Gene Wolfe ("The Fifth Head of Cerberus," etc.) and visual artist Ed Emshwiller. Award-winning author Neal Stephenson will host the evening's events.

Tickets for the June 16 induction ceremony will be available for purchase by the general public (at $50) on Monday, May 7, while EMP/SFM members can make reservations (at $40) beginning Monday, April 30. The evening will include a seated dessert reception and ceremony. For additional information visit sfhomeworld.org, and to purchase tickets call 206-770-2702.

On the same day, June 16, EMP/SFM will open an exhibition called "Out of This World: Extraordinary Costumes from Film and Television," which will run through September 30, 2007. It will feature more than 30 costumes and related objects from Star Trek and other science fiction films and television programs such as "Star Wars," "Blade Runner," "Terminator," Battlestar Galactica and Batman.

The exhibition will allow visitors to examine how costume design incorporates color, style, scale, materials, historical traditions and cultural cues to help performers and audiences engage, in new or accepted ways, with the characters being portrayed. Visitors will be encouraged to wear costumes to the opening.
