George Takei ties the knot
Written by Derek Kessler on Thursday, 02 October 2008
George TakeiWith California’s recent ruling allowing gay marriages in the state, celebrities such as Ellen DeGeneres and George Takei for the first time found themselves planning a wedding. Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu on the original Star Trek series and for several of the movies, finally married Brad Altman, his partner of 21 years. “It’s high time we made it legitimate,” Takei said.

The wedding was held on Sunday, December 14th at the Japanese American Cultural Center in Los Angeles. The wedding party included Star Trek costars Walter Koenig and Nichelle Nichols as best man and matron of honor. The ceremony was conducted by a Buddhist monk, with Native American wedding rings, a bagpipe procession, and a traditional Japanese tea ceremony. Takei said of Altman in his vows in front of 200 friends that his husband is “an organized, detailed-obsessed, punctuality-driven control freak. I’m easygoing so we're a good fit.”

Takei has long been a civil rights activist and views his marriage as another step forward in the long drive towards universal equality. He said, “We have a relationship that’s been stronger and longer-lived than some of our straight friends, and yet we were not equal. What this does is give us that dignity; being part of the American system and being whole. We’re making the American system whole as well, as America is becoming more equal.”

Of course, any wedding of a Star Trek star couldn’t get off without a little Trek touch – the guests were all given a small box of Japanese teas bearing the phrase “May sweet equality live long and prosper.”

TrekUnited wishes all the best to the newlywed couple. Congratulations, George and Brad!
