Introducing Phase II’s Enterprise v. 1.5
Written by Derek Kessler on Thursday, 28 August 2008
Star Trek: Phase IIComing in as a step between the TOS Enterprise and the refit movies Enterprise is the Star Trek: Phase II Enterprise, originally designed for the series of the same name scrapped in favor of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Well, the fan film outfit formerly known as Star Trek: New Voyages is transitioning to full-blown Phase II, err, phase with new costumes (including the white bulls-eye engineering suit seen in the movies). And, apparently following the events of the upcoming episode “Blood and Fire,” the Enterprise herself is going to get a much-needed Phase II upgrade.

The refitted Phase II Enterprise will make its debut in the following episode, titled “Enemy: Starfleet.” The design, by Daren Dochterman graphical wizard (he worked on restoring and creating new footage for the Director’s Cut of TMP) is based very closely off the designs of the unfinished Phase II Enterprise. All he had to work off of were a handful of photos of the incomplete studio model and a few concept paintings. And the challenge of blending together the TOS Enterprise and the TMP Enterprise.

Eagle-eyed readers will notice the old-style copper deflector dish inside the new-style extended cowling. You can also note the addition of a defined torpedo launcher on the rounded neck between engineering and the saucer section. And, of course, the very definite new-style angular warp nacelles and raked-back pylons - very reminiscent of the complete refit Enterprise. The nacelles still retain a little of the old-style cylinder in the bulging vents on either side, but the iconic glowing red marble caps are gone, replaced by what appears to be subtle blue caps that closely mimic the lines of the angular nacelles. Oh, and the sensor domes on both the top and bottom of the saucer are now blue instead of white.

Overall, the design is a successful blending of the two Enterprise styles, though even with their rounded edges, the angular warp nacelles still contrast awkwardly with the smooth flowing lines of the saucer section.
