Final word: William Shatner not in ST09
Written by Derek Kessler on Thursday, 28 August 2008
William ShatnerThe rumor mill has been swirling on Shatner’s involvement - specifically his lack thereof - in Star Trek (2009). The original Captain Kirk has long said that he is not involved and knows nothing about the production, but it seems that some people just couldn’t let it go. So the burden of proof fell to ST09 producer/director extraordinaire JJ Abrams, who flat out says, “No, the only cast member from the original films is Nimoy.”

So that rules out, well, everybody but Leonard Nimoy, who we’ve known about for what seems like ages. Speaking with Star Trek Magazine, Shatner said, “I have no connection with the film whatsoever. It’s the strangest thing. Even my dear friend Leonard [Nimoy] won’t tell me what it’s about.”

There you have it: no Shatner.

In the same interview with IGN that Abrams put the kibosh on Shatner rumors, he also revealed that having only produced a first cut a few weeks ago, ST09 is rapidly approaching the point of a final cut, itself just a few weeks away. The final cut is just filmed material, however, and will not contain computer generated effects, music, sound effects, etc. Abrams predicts that they will still be able to meet the original Christmas 2008 deadline in spite of the possibility of a relaxed timetable following the move-back of the premiere to May 2009.
