And it’s priceline.com he has to thank. When the fledgling discount airline ticket portal first netted William Shatner as their commercial spokesman ‘The Negotiator,’ some in the ad business were skeptical of the decision. Ten years later, priceline.com’s name recognition is through the roof, after Shatner promised in his first commercial for them that Priceline was going to be “Big. Really big.”
Shatner’s eccentric priceline.com spots have been mocked and parodied by Saturday Night Live and MAD Magazine, but despite that, Brett Keller, priceline.com’s Chief Marketing Officer, said “Most celebrity relationships wear out over time and are short-lived. It's a tribute to William Shatner's acting skills that the priceline.com spots have remained so fresh, entertaining and relevant for a decade.” Today, Shatner has been named as one of the top twenty five celebrity spokespeople by AOL’s marketing and finance site Wallet Pop.
Ranked at #24, Shatner placed ahead of James Earl Jones (the voice of Darth Vader), who has been doing spots for Verizon Wireless since 1995. Ranked ahead of Shatner, however, are some real heavyweights: including Fabio (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter), David Leisure (Joe Isuzu), Joe DiMaggio (Mr. Coffee), Wilford Brimley (Diabeetus guy - Liberty Medical), and Michael Jordan (Nike, Hanes, Wheaties, everybody else). So who ranked number one? None other than Bill Cosby and his always playful over three decades of commercials for JELL-O.
