 Following up on the last entry into Star Trek: The Helena Chronicles’ first season, ‘Obsessions,’ Hidden Frontier has posted the preview for the next episode of the fan film series, titled ‘The Letter of the Law.’ At the end of ‘Obsessions,’ we’re left with the U.S.S. Helena on the run from Starfleet itself, declared rogue and likely to be hunted down by a veritable armada of ships. And the preview confirms that, with shots of the Helena going head to head with other Starfleet starships - it’s a rare scene for Star Trek.
Like the previous Star Trek: The Helena Chronicles previews, the music from 2006’s The Da Vinci Code, specifically the mysterious and suspenseful Che Valiers De Sangreal. The editing is superb and leaves enough mystery in the episode that I’m actually intrigued to see what they’re actually doing. The preview’s impact is also compounded by having seen the previous episodes; in the typical Hidden Frontier season of three to four episodes, threads that run through an entire season are still fresh in the mind when the season starts to wind down (we’re now on the third and finale episode of the premiere season).
Unlike the previews for its sister series, Star Trek: Odyssey, Helena’s previews have consistently been well cut and contained some of the best acting in the series, as any preview should. Hidden Frontier, while having not yet announced a release date for ‘The Letter of the Law,’ typically runs about a month from preview release to episode premiere. Atypically, however, in the latest Hidden Frontier newsletter, the fan film production outfit revealed the 'The Letter of the Law' will be their final release for 2008, but before it comes out, they will be releasing two more episodes (presumably of Odyssey and the new mini-series Star Trek: Federation One) and the collaborative feature-length Operation Beta Shield.
