Holy different article avatar Batman! What can I say, the Twitter logo wouldn’t fit will in the awkward box. Anyway, TrekUnited is now on Twitter! What is Twitter, you might be asking? It is what called a “micro-blogging” service, where users can update their friends on whatever in little messages of just 140 characters, i.e. a text message. Twitter takes these updates and not only stores them so you can follow a timeline of a certain user, but also allows you to aggregate all of your friends into one all-encompassing feed.
Now that I’ve explained that, what does TrekUnited on Twitter offer to the average person? Or you, I suppose. It opens up another avenue of communication from us to you. And a wide open avenue it is. With Twitter, you can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging clients, email, SMS, RSS (text message), and even on other sites like Facebook. And with more than two million registered users, chances are that somebody you know is also on Twitter.
Like the vast majority of popular websites, registration and use of Twitter is free of charge and supported via advertisements. Apart from the average user who keeps tabs on their Twitter friends, NASA is using Twitter to disseminate information directly from its Phoenix Mars Lander (in fact, Twitter users got information about the lander’s water discovery before the news media did), CNN and the BBC use Twitter to broadcast breaking news alerts, and Democratic presidential nominee-to-be Barack Obama and his campaign team have been using Twitter to communicate quick updates to his supporters.
We have hooked the TrekUnited news feed into Twitter to push out notifications of our latest stories. Registration with Twitter is simple and easy (and free!), and adding TrekUnited as a friend and getting our updates is simple as clicking the “Follow” button right below our logo. So go ahead, take the Twitter plunge.
