While CBS has historically been resistant to putting content online without getting a direct payback (as is the case with iTunes), their online media viewer has enjoyed some success through its integrated advertisements. With the proliferation of broadband internet access, viewers have been begging for more. Well, CBS has stepped up to the plate, offering up a new website with streaming high definition television. And as a bonus to Star Trek fans, the new CBS HD Gallery also includes high definition episodes of Star Trek Remastered.
While right now there are only two episodes of TOS-R available in the HD Gallery, that’s two more than were available before, and logic would dictate that eventually it will expand to encompass more episodes and more series. For Star Trek fans, this is the only place to get free HD Star Trek, especially TOS-R. While the entire series was remastered in high definition, due to the constraints of local affiliate syndication, TOS-R was never broadcast in HD.
Thus, the only place you could find it in HD was on the Season 1 HD DVD box set released last year. When HD DVD failed earlier this year, season two of TOS-R was released on just plain DVD, with no announced plans to release any of the series on the victorious Blu-ray format.
Where, oh where, was the HD Star Trek Remastered to be found? Nowhere. Until now. As of this posting, CBS has uploaded HD streams of ‘The Corbomite Maneuver’ and ‘Where No Man Has Gone Before.’ Both are available for viewing in what CBS has termed ‘HQ’ (480p) and HD (720p), though no full 1080p HD as one would get with Blu-ray or HD DVD is available. The commercial breaks for the episodes are filled by a single non-skip-able advertisement - if you jump ahead to the next act, you’ll have to watch the preceding ad before watching further.
CBS lists system requirements of 1.5 Mbps broadband for 480p, and 2.5 Mbps for 720p HD. The Flash-based player is viewable on Mac OS X 10.4 or later and Microsoft Windows XP and Vista, on the AOL, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, and Safari browsers. Essentially, if it supports the latest version of Adobe Flash, it’ll work.
Apart from Star Trek Remastered, the CBS HD Gallery also is streaming Big Bang Theory, CSI, CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, Flashpoint, How I Met Your Mother, Late Show with David Letterman, NCIS, Numb3rs, Rules of Engagement, Swingtown, and The Unit.
