Abrams: the challenge of ST09 was making it relevant to today
Written by Derek Kessler on Tuesday, 22 July 2008
JJ AbramsSpeaking with IGN at the Television Critics Association (where he was supposed to be talking about Fringe), JJ Abrams was hounded about Star Trek (2009) - as one would expect - apparently nobody cares about Fringe. Asked about the absence of any Paramount projects at Comic-Con this month, Abrams admitted that he wanted to bring Star Trek to the convention, but Paramount wouldn’t do it. “So I’'m very disappointed because the characters are so good, the actors are so good, that I would have been psyched just to show some of the stuff that's about the people because it's not really about the visual effects. But with so little [FX] done, this was a big strategic decision on their part.”

Asked what the biggest challenge of taking on Star Trek was, Abrams said:
QuoteI think the biggest challenge was trying to make it relevant to now. Like to do it despite it being Star Trek. I don’t think it’s enough to say, “Oh, it’s Star Trek, let’s just...” I think it’s a question of: How do you make it something that would be what it wants to be, even if it hadn’t been a series before.

To accomplish this, Abrams said that you have to “invest completely in the characters” and tell a good story, regardless of where it is set.

Abrams also said that in today’s age of smartphones and MP3 players, that “there’s a king of kitschy quality that must go it it’s going to be something you believe is real.” While we can assume that means that Star Trek (2009) will be notably updated to relate to modern technology (as the original Star Trek did in 1966), Abrams said that also means the film will focus more on the characters, “I never saw how Kirk and Spock became so connected and that’s what this movie does. It does it with the entire family of the Enterprise.”

Abrams also said that Zachary Quinto brought “a gravity and an incredible sense of humor” to the “deceivingly complicated” role of Spock. Looking back over cuts of the film, Abrams said, “And he was doing things I didn’t even realize while we were shooting. These amazing things that kind of track your story.”
