Star Trek The Tour turns into The Exhibition, hits San Diego
Written by Derek Kessler on Sunday, 20 July 2008
Star Trek: The Exhibition(From June 14, 2008) Opened on June 20, in San Diego, was be Star Trek The Exhibition, the next iteration of Star Trek The Tour. After closing down its premiere show in Long Beach, California, having run from January to March, nothing was heard from Star Trek The Tour. The touring show has been reborn as the newly focused Star Trek The Exhibition, under the guidance of Premier Exhibitions, Inc. The first stop of the revamped exhibit is at the San Diego Air and Space Museum.

Premier Exhibitions manages a number of quality touring exhibitions, including the popular Titanic Artifact Exhibition (currently in Monterrey, Mexico) and the controversial Bodies... The Exhibition (soon to end its run in Cincinnati, Ohio). Premier Exhibitions focuses on placing its touring exhibitions in museums and like facilities.

Many of the same features from The Tour have been carried over into The Exhibition, including the original Enterprise bridge - on which visitors can now be photographed with stand-ins of Spock, McCoy, and Scotty (you sit in the captain’s chair, of course) - the Enterprise-D corridor and Picard’s quarters, the dual flight simulators, and the Guardian of Forever.

Unlike The Tour, however, the Exhibition is smaller so as to fit more effectively in a museum environment (where space is often at a premium). At the same time, the exhibits are jam-packed with information and even more interactive. The Exhibition will also be spending longer in each city (Bodies has been in Cincinnati since January). While a close date for San Diego has not yet been determined, it will certainly be in the city through the end of Comic-Con late next month. The smaller size and longer stops will allow Premier Exhibitions to run two instances of Star Trek The Exhibition at a time. Details of the second city set have yet to be worked out, but it will include a comparable allotment of props and costumes, as well as a recreation of the Enterprise-D bridge. The revised schedule for The Exhibition has yet to be released.

Tickets for Star Trek The Exhibition cost $24 for adults and $16 for children, a considerable discount over that of The Tour ($35 and $17.50, respectively, for weekend tickets). Special discounts are available for military members, senior citizens, students, and museum members, as well as groups of 15 or more. Tickets can be purchased at the museum, by phone, or online.
