(From June 12, 2008) Well, we’ve got proof now that Cryptic Studios has taken over Star Trek: Online. While the MMORPG specialist won’t publicly admit to having taken on the project, their website has revealed one telling clue: a countdown (to July 28, 2008, midnight PDT) with a background taken from ST:O artwork. It’s a little blurb, but with just over a week to go, it’s all we’ve got so far.
After the unsurprising but disappointing collapse of Perpetual Entertainment in February of this year, the fate of Star Trek: Online was entirely up in the air. The project was purchased by another gaming developer in the San Francisco area, but the remnants of Perpetual remained mum on who it was.
Star Trek gaming site Hailing Frequency made the connection that the background image for the countdown was the exact same artwork published in an issue of Gamer Informer Magazine earlier this year, talking about ST:O right before the collapse of Perpetual Entertainment.
What will Cryptic do with Star Trek: Online? That remains to be seen, so stay tuned!
