(From June 10, 2008) In preparation for the new movie, CBS Products has announced a several new licensing agreements for Star Trek merchandise. The contracts span all sorts of established and new marketing fields for Star Trek, including models, shirts, computer accessories, and cakes.
First up is the perennial Star Trek merchandising opportunity, ship toys and figures. This time around, it’s going to Mattel, who has had the license in years past. Mattel has gained the rights to Tyco R/C flying toys, Star Trek ‘Barbie’ figures, a Trek version of the popular Scene It DVD trivia game, and a new Star Trek version of 20Q[uestions]. On the subject of 20Q, an online learning version of the Star Trek 20Q has been released, likely to help collect data for the coming release of a handheld version. Think you can stump it?
Next up are the ever-popular model kits, which are with Round Two, the owners of Polar Lights and AMT. Several new models should be released soon, including an autumn-bound reissue of the Polar Lights TOS Enterprise.
Collectible stamps will be issued by IGPC. Figure key chains will be produced by Plus Basic Fun, USB computer accessories by Dreamlink, pillows and throws by Northwest, and watches by Armitron. GIT will be producing digital collections of all Star Trek comics published up to 2005 (that’s a lot of comics).
For those of you that like Star Trek-themed parties, you’re in luck. DecoPac has secured a license for creating Trek cake decorating kits, and Hallmark will be producing Star Trek party supplies.
If you like to wear your Trek pride on your sleeve, then you’ll want to check out the upcoming releases from Fortune Fashions, who will have a line of “fashion-forward, tred right tees” featuring characters and phrases from Star Trek. Rubies is also stepping up as the maker of Star Trek costumes.
Now all of this is obviously making the money in your wallet start to burn, so I’ll throw some water on it: this is not for the movie. Star Trek (2009) merchandising is all being handled by Paramount Pictures; as you may recall, the license for ship toys and action figures from the movie went to Playmates. But you can still expect CBS and all it’s new licensees to take full advantage of the coming interest boost in TOS that will likely come along with the movie.
As all the new license holders slowly crank up their production machines, we’ll be sure to keep you apprised on all new product unveilings and launches.
