Sorry about the month’s worth of news downtime here. The combination of preparing and working with FedConUSA, the subsequent fall-out from, and the immediately following three weeks of full-time military duty, that followed by a switch in servers (look ma, no crashes!), I simply haven’t had the time and/or access to get the news online. Rest assured, I have been keeping track of the news over this period and will do my best to catch up over the next few days (lots and lots of news to write), so here goes.
The News So, why the big fail, Derek? I had no time, to put it simply. And unfortunately, I’m the only one here writing the news! So... if any of you out there feel like helping out, I’m more than willing to give you a shot. Also, there were some kinks to work out with the news publishing system before I could get posting, so now that those have been unkinked, we’re up and rearing to go!
FedConUSA Boom. There’s obviously been a lot of fall-out and many people were hurt in the collapse of what was one of the most promising conventions to come about in many years. There are a million different reasons behind the collapse, but that doesn’t change the fact that it happened. And for that, we are unendingly sorry.
SciFiUnited Part of the fall-out affected the nexus of TrekUnited, Galactica.com, and Dr. Who Daily: SciFiUnited. Site manager Chris McKeown, who had previously been involved with FedConUSA, decided to part ways with the rest of the network and re-establish SciFiUpdates, the site that eventually evolved into SciFiUnited. As part of the division, part of the SciFiUnited forum database was copied to SciFiUpdates. As a result, if you registered with TrekUnited after the SFU merger, or if you ever posted on the SFU forum with your TU login, your membership may be intact on SciFiUpdates. If you would like to have your account on SciFiUpdates deleted, you should contact Chris McKeown.
In the meantime, we are working to prepare a relaunch of SciFiUnited. If you have any suggestions for the future of SciFiUnited, or would like to help out, please let us know.
Tim Brazeal This biggest part of the fall-out came in the form of Tim Brazeal, owner of TrekUnited and FedConUSA. With the collapse, Brazeal has been forced into debt to repay FedConUSA’s guests, suppliers, the hotel, and the attendees. In combination with serving as the chief of the SFU network sites, working on SciFi Studios, and a regular job to pay for it all, he’s realized that he’s just stretched too thin.
As such, Tim has stepped down as the chief of the SFU network sites, which in the end will have little affect on the operations of TrekUnited or our sister sites. Tim will be focusing on repaying the debts from FedConUSA, his real life job, and building up SciFi Studios and it’s flagship project, IQ-145.
The Server Monica the Server, as she was affectionately named (she kept going down), is no more. Despite the guarantee of 99.9% uptime from our previous hosting company, the server hosting TrekUnited and our associated sites kept crashing. And crashing. And crashing. So we’ve moved to elsewhere. We brought everything along with us and put all our stuff right back where it was, just on a new server. If you happen to run across something that’s missing or just not right, let us know and we’ll take care of it.
