Star Trek crew wanted for sequel
Written by Derek Kessler on Friday, 06 June 2008
Star Trek (2009)Sure, it’s still almost a year until Star Trek (2009) even hits theaters, but the brass at Paramount Pictures are thinking ahead, you know, just in case. According to writer Roberto Orci, Paramount wants to lock down himself, co-writer Alex Kurtzman, executive producer Bryan Burk, producer Damon Lindelof, and of course, producer/director JJ Abrams for a potential sequel for ST09.

Paramount has already signed the principle cast on for two more sequels. Even so, this is standard practice in sequel-happy Hollywood. Just in case, the studios prefer to lock their cast and crew into a potential sequel. If the movie does well, then they’ll be called back, as was recently evidenced by the wild success of Iron Man, followed almost immediately by the announcement of Iron Man 2.

Obviously, Paramount is excited about Abrams Trek. They’ve given him an enormous budget, reported to be upwards of $150 million, and without having seen a single scrap of film, they’re confident enough in Star Trek’s blockbuster potential that they moved it from a Christmas 2008 release to the start of the 2009 summer movie season. With that in mind, it should come as no surprise that Paramount wants to make sure all of its key players are still on board for the next go around the galaxy with the Enterprise.

For their part, Abrams and Co. having already wrapped up principle production on Star Trek are moving on to their next projects. Lindelof has Lost, Abrams is tackling Stephen King’s Dark Tower, Orci and Kurtzman are on Transformers 2 (set for a 2009 release as well), and Orci, Kurtzman, Burk, and Abrams are all working on getting the new series Fringe running for Fox (premiering this fall).
