While Star Trek movies have always been about the Enterprise and her crew, a lot of times we get to see other ships in action, be they Starfleet or not. In the past we’ve dealt heavily with the U.S.S. Reliant (The Wrath of Khan), a Klingon bird-of-prey (The Search For Spock and The Voyage Home), the U.S.S. Excelsior (The Undiscovered Country), the Son’a Flagship (Insurrection), and the Scimitar (Nemesis), all of course in addition to the Enterprises (refit original, A, B, D, and E). Today we’re getting a better look at what we’re going to see in a year’s time in Star Trek (2009). Beware, there be spoilers after the break.
U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701 Like that one wasn’t obvious. As with almost all the rest of Star Trek, the Enterprise will be the primary point of action, and the bridge will be foremost among that. In ST09 we’ll see both Christopher Pike (Bruce Greenwood) and James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) in the captain’s chair. Just as with every original series movie, the Enterprise sets have changed, and are even different from those of the original television series. In addition to the bridge, sets were built for sickbay, crew quarters, corridors, and a transporter room. Engineering is described as “a redressed industrial location.”
U.S.S. Kelvin The Kelvin is a Starfleet starship from a generation before the Enterprise, and notably smaller. As we never saw any Federation starships other than the Constitution-class during TOS, the Kelvin will be of a new class design we have yet to see. The Kelvin will be commanded by Captain Robau (Faran Tahir) with George Kirk (Chris Hemsworth) serving as first officer. The sets for the Kelvin were all unique sets, not redresses of the Enterprise sets (or visa versa) and include the bridge, sickbay, engineering and corridors.
Romulan Ship Since the villains are to be the Romulans, and since this is Star Trek, they’re going to need a ship. These Romulans come from the 24th century, so they’re bringing their ship with them, though apparently it is not a time ship. The interior design is apparently radically different than the traditional Romulan ships from the era of Star Trek: The Next Generation; it is said to be ‘surreal,’ whatever that means with respect to interior design.
Spock’s Time Ship If the Romulans are traveling through time, then so is [old] Spock. Leonard Nimoy, however, will not be using the previously-rumored (and debunked) Guardian of Forever; he’s taking a ride in a Vulcan-designed time ship. The one-person vessel has a small command area and a ‘time core.’ Just don’t tell the High Command.
Apart from the four primary ships described above, there are some other vessels that will be featured in ST09, and in line with Abram’s pledge to build whenever possible, have their own sets. These include a medical shuttle from the U.S.S. Kelvin, a transport shuttle from Kirk’s time at Starfleet Academy, and the Federation Ship Bridge Simulator for the Kobayashi Maru Test, which is a redress of the U.S.S. Kelvin’s bridge set.
