While the tabloid and even the mainstream press has been swarming over the so-called ‘exclusion’ of William Shatner from Star Trek (2009) – remember, Kirk died in Generations – The Shat himself is over his initial disappointment, “I’m solidly behind being disappointed that I’m not in it.”
After the cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise and the relative box office disappointment of Star Trek Nemesis, many in the media and even fandom declared that Star Trek was dead, or at least in intensive care. And even with Hollywood’s golden boy, JJ Abrams, helming the latest film with a massive $150 million budget, there’s still skepticism about whether it’s going to work. Shatner himself is optimistic:
It’ll be interesting to see whether [the new movie] is successful or not. If anyone can make Star Trek live, [Abrams] can do it. The question is: Is it still alive, or is it time for all of us to move on? |
Unlike the remaining Original Series cast, Shatner doesn’t seem to have taken the time to meet with and talk to his successor as James T. Kirk: Chris Pine. Shatner says that he “met him and just said hello.” Nichelle Nichols, Walter Koenig, Leonard Nimoy, and George Takei have all met with their respective younger selves (Zoe Saldana, Anton Yelchin, Zachary Quinto, and John Cho, respectively) for reportedly in depth conversations about the characters they’ve taken on and what it means to be part of Star Trek. Apparently not Mr. Shatner.
Shatner also directed some attention to what many observe to be the worst of the Star Trek films: The Final Frontier, which he directed.
The extraordinary disappointment was that before the special effects went in, I asked the producer: Is this as good as I think it is? I thought it was pretty good, and the heads of the studio were saying ‘good job’. The problem of that movie [was too many] compromises. The original compromise was: Let’s make it an alien who thinks he’s God. Soon, I realized I had compromised the whole movie. |
