TOS Director Joseph Pevney dies at 96 years old
Written by Derek Kessler on Sunday, 25 May 2008
Joseph Pevney, dead at 96Joseph Pevney, the director of a number of Star Trek episodes, including the penultimate “The City on the Edge of Forever,” peacefully died this week in his home in Palm Desert, California. Ninety-six years old, Pevney was surrounded by his wife and family when he passed.

Including “The City on the Edge of Forever,” Pevney directed fourteen episodes of TOS, several considered to be among the best: “Amok Time,” “The Apple,” “Arena,” “Catspaw,” “The Deadly Years,” “The Devil in the Dark,” “Friday’s Child,” “The Immunity Syndrome,” “Journey to Babel,” “The Return of the Archons,” “A Taste of Armageddon,” “The Trouble With Tribbles,” and “Wolf in the Fold.” With fourteen episodes to his name, Pevney was tied with the late Marc Daniels for the most number of TOS episodes directed.

Joseph Pevney was born on September 15, 1911, in New York City. He started his showbiz career in 1924 with a gig as a young male soprano on the vaudeville circuit. Pevney hated working vaudeville and quickly moved into theater, performing in shows such as Home of the Brave, The World We Make, and Key Largo. Pevney had a brief career as a film actor, appearing in a handful of films, including Thieves’ Highway and the 1947 classic Body and Soul, in which he played Shorty Pulaski.

In the ‘50’s, Pevney moved over to the back end of the camera and started a long career as a director. Up to 1984, he is credited as director on more than 80 productions, including the films The Plunderers and the Oscar-nominated Man of a Thousand Faces, as well as episodes of Bonanza, The Paper Chase, Bewitched, Trapper John, M.D., and the aforementioned Star Trek, among others. Pevney reportedly “got a kick” out of the fact that the nearly unanimous top three TOS episodes (“The City on the Edge of Forever,” “Amok Time,” and “The Trouble With Tribbles”) were all episodes that he directed.

Joseph Pevney is survived by his wife Margo, daughter Jan, sons Jay and Joel, grandchildren Ryan and Amber, and three great grandchildren. At his request, no memorial services will be held.
