Sure, she’s playing Uhura in Star Trek (2009), but that doesn’t mean she’s really allowed to talk about it. But she can still talk about everything else, including all of the other 40 years of Star Trek, and it turns out, that like half the cast, she wasn’t really into before she got the role. Her favorite episodes: The Savage Curtain and Plato’s Stepchildren.
As we’ve said before, Saldana has met with Nichelle Nichols before to discuss the part, not just to impart advice, but to get a feel for what the character is really about. Even so, producer/director JJ Abrams advised those in the cast not to watch loads of Star Trek in preparation to their parts, but to “inform yourself of the whole concept of Star Trek... I don’t want you to cloud whatever contribution you guys can make yourselves to the role that you are jumping into.”
So instead of watching a bunch of Star Trek, she’s talked to Nichols about it, as well as with Abrams and co-stars Zachary Quinto (Spock) and Chris Pine (James T. Kirk). She said, “For some reasons Zach’s Spock and Chris’ Kirk brought out my Uhura. The conversations and the sharing the knowledge of Star Trek, it was all really good.”
Despite that, she wasn’t really able to spend much time getting to know the cast, as she spent part of the time filming also working on James Cameron’s Avatar. She did said that “Chris and Zach could not have been better cast. I can’t even tell you if I met the real Zach or the real Chris, because they were so committed to their character.”
Saldana described working with Leonard Nimoy as “mind boggling.” “He has such grace and his energy and his approach are amazing. After all these years he just puts on his Spock shoes and transforms into Spock.” She said that playing legendary roles like Spock or Uhura when the original actors are still around was a humbling responsibility to deliver something that’s going to live on beyond them.
