With the Supreme Court having overturned California’s ban of gay marriages and civil unions, George Takei and his partner Brad Altman are now officially engaged to be married. Said Takei of the development: “Our California dream is reality. Brad Altman and I can now marry. We are overjoyed! At long last, the barrier to full marriage rights for same-sex couples has been torn down. We are equal with all citizens of our state!”
Takei, though long a public figure, publically hid his homosexuality until 2005. He came out as gay to protest a veto by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger of a same-sex marriage law. The law will be officially rendered null in June (and whose overturn Schwarzenegger now backs), after which time Takei and Altman plan to wed as soon as possible, though they haven’t pinned down an exact date or location yet.
